August 2014 Obsessions
Hi guys! Today I have something a little different for you! I’ve been debating whether to start a monthly favorites series for a while and finally decided to give it a go. I wanted to share more than just my favorite polishes, so these are my monthly obsessions! It’s everything I was excited about for the previous month!
Since we are nearing the end of September, I figured it is about time I finally posted my August Obsessions! Just a little late to the game here, but I’ll catch my groove soon! I hope you guys enjoy my little world outside of nail polish. :)
I’ve always loved boho waves. It’s so effortless looking while still being so chic. I have never been able to quite figure out how to get it to look just like Jessica Biel’s loose, undone waves… until now! I found a tutorial from Divine Caroline (thanks to Pinterest!) that finally made sense! After removing the curling iron from your hair, the key is to pull the curl straight while the hair cools! Perfect boho waves, every time!
Hi, I’m Valesha and I’m a TV junkie. Haha! Especially within the past few years, I’ve become obsessed with TV shows. So much so, that I make lists of TV shows that I want to watch each upcoming season. In early August, I was on a 30 Rock kick. I got into the show after it’s final season aired (thanks to a recommendation by Gaby, (@lacquerloon from Instagram) and I am utterly obsessed. The humor is so dry and sarcastic (which is my favorite) and the one-liners are amazing. Such a quotable show. Every time I watch it, I notice more hilarious things I missed the last time. And Tina Fey is life, basically. I adore her so much. Excuse me while I go binge watch again…
The Walking Dead Comics
On the topic of TV, like everyone else, I am OBSESSED with The Walking Dead. It’s pretty ridiculous how much I think about and obsess over it. I’ve re-watched all the seasons three times this Summer, I read every single article I see, I go on forums and spy on what people say about it and I follow a Facebook page that posts spoilers and sneaky pictures of the set. So now you know my dirty secrets. Haha! It’s been killing me having to wait these 8 lonnnnnng months for season five, so to tide me over, I decided to grab a couple of The Walking Dead Comics. I got books one and two, which are compilations of a bunch of the regular comic books so that I can binge read them. It’s been great getting to see a different aspect of a show I love!
Perfect Iced Coffee
A few years ago, I discovered this recipe from Craving Comfort for “The Last Iced Coffee Recipe You’ll Ever Need” (again, thanks to Pinterest!) Ever since then, whenever the weather starts to warm up, I pull out my gear and get to cold-brewing my coffee concentrate and mixing my sweet cream. This coffee is to die for. I am a big Starbucks/Coffee Shop person but in the Summer, forget Starbucks because this is like, a million times better. The coffee itself is so silky and smooth. The creamer adds just that extra touch of sweetness without all the chemicals in traditional coffee creamers and I also have some Ghirardelli Caramel Sauce that I might squeeze in if the mood strikes. It is heaven. I can’t recommend this enough. It’s quick too because you make a gallon or more at a time so each morning all you have to do it pour some in your tumbler and go. The only suggestion I have is, when you choose your coffee, do not get a French roast. That’s why I got last time and it tasted like I had just kissed a chain-smoker. NO THANKS. I would suggest going to your local coffee shop and seeing what they suggest for cold brewing, or just try a few different coffees for yourself. You can also up the amount of coffee grounds you use, depending on how dark you want your coffee concentrate. Just play around with the recipe and find what you like! I stay pretty true to the recipe linked above. :)
Speaking of coffee, I got this Blue Gradient Cold Cup from Starbucks for my iced coffees and I’ve used it every single morning. It’s so cute! Plus I’m pretty sure that all of us nail gals are obsessed with gradient anything!
It’s the year of the brows and I hope it stays that way for years to come. I never paid much attention to my brows (besides a monthly brow wax) until last year. My sister did my makeup when we were going out and she used wetted down matte eyeshadow that matched my brows to fill them in. I loved the way it looked but thought it was only a look I could pull off while going out. This year, I took the plunge and started filling my brows in every time I did my makeup and now I can’t do my makeup without doing my brows. It’s essential. I recently got some Anastasia products from Sephora after having used Urban Decay’s Brow Box for a while. The Brow Box is great but the Anastasia products are out of this world. Amazing quality, amazing staying power, absolute perfection. On a daily basis I use the DipBrow Pomade in Blonde, Brow Wiz in Medium Brown (formerly Medium Ash) and Brush #12. It’s the trifecta of brows, I tell you!
Like a lot of people, I’ve been entranced by “The Kylie Jenner Lip“. It’s become her signature as of late. I ran over to Target one day, hoping to find some products so I could recreate the look for myself. I picked up Sonia Kashuk’s Satin Luxe Lip Color in Nude Pink along with a lip liner I thought might match. While, it didn’t work at all for the look I was going for, it turns out the lipstick is my perfect every day lip color. I work in an office where it would be totally weird to sport a bold red lip (even though it’s my fave!) so usually I just go with a spot of lip balm and call it good. But this Sonia Kashuk lipstick is my perfect “My Lips But Better” shade. Not only that, it’s so creamy and moisturizing so it leaves my lips feeling soft. I’ve been sporting it every day at work since I got it. LOVE!
Aren’t all of us mascara lovin’ ladies always on the prowl for a mascara that will do everything the advertisements promise? “Makes your lashes 10x fuller!” “Curls and lengthens for luscious lashes!” “No clumps with twice the volume!” Blah blah blah. In the 15+ years since I started wearing makeup, I’ve never found a mascara that I loved enough to make me stop trying to find something better… until now!
I’d been using Maybelline’s Waterproof Lash Discovery on my lower lashes for a while because it was suggested on a blog or YouTube channel I follow (now I can’t remember whose!) because it has a small brush, good for getting in to those lower lashes and it wouldn’t smudge and give you raccoon eyes. One day, I had gone to visit my sister and forgotten my regular mascara at home. Normally I hate waterproof mascara because it’s impossible to get off but I had no choice but to use it. I put it on and my mouth dropped. My eyelashes looked SO. LONG. The curl held too! I mean, my eyelashes were almost touching my brows and I’m not even exaggerating and so my love affair with Lash Discovery began. I recently got the regular (not waterproof) formula to try out but it’s not the same. It has to be the waterproof formula. And guess what, it’s NOT impossible to remove like most waterproof mascaras are! I have had no trouble removing it with just a bit of my Neutrogena Eye Makeup Remover on a cotton pad. I’ve also removed it with my homemade eye makeup remover which has coconut oil and baby shampoo. I have another mascara I love too, that I put on top of Lash Discovery to kind of darken and thicken the lashes up a bit more. I’ve been contemplating filming a mascara routine video because I’m so happy about this development! Would anyone be interested in seeing that?
This next photo isn’t the best, it was taken with the front facing camera of my iPhone… but there is no denying my lashes! Look how full they look! Love!
I’ve been following the lovely Kelley (@kelleydigioia) on Instagram for quite a while now and she is one of my absolute faves. I don’t understand how she doesn’t have a bajillion followers by now because her feed is what my dreams are made of. Not only that, she is sweet as pie and she recently got 2 of the cutest puppies I have ever seen! If you aren’t already following her, go… NOW! Also, Kelley, if you are reading this, I know that I’m 27 years old and all but will you adopt me? I want to live in your house! #HGTVworthy
“Shake It Off” by Taylor Swift
Taylor Swift gets a lot of flack, sometimes even from me. Her music was starting to sound too similar there for a while and I was kinda getting over the hype. Then, here she came with her new song “Shake It Off” and I’m a T. Swift lover once again! This tune is so catchy! I had it stuck in my head for a week straight when it was first released. Not to mention, the video is adorable. I admire any artist who doesn’t take themselves too seriously. Go Taylor Go!
I hope you guys enjoyed this post! It’s fun to share some of my other favorite things! Are any of these your favorites too? What were you loving during the month of August? Comment below and let me know! I’d love to hear what you are swooning over!
