Oscar Awards 2015 Fashion Inspired Nails!

Posted on Feb 24, 2015

Ello ello! Who watched the Oscars on Sunday night? I didn’t watch them because I was too busy doing fashion inspired nail art which is kinda better… amirite? :) I did watch the red carpet beforehand and while the fashions and beauty were so breathtaking, I wasn’t feeling super inspired to do nail art to match. Maybe because I usually end up doing the looks that have embellishments and patterns and a lot of the gown had either very simplistic embellishments and patterns or they were solid or monochromatic in color. I did end up finding a few that I had to recreate on my nails.

Lorelei Linklater’s gown was a little strange for the occasion in my opinion but that didn’t mean I didn’t like it! There was never a more perfect use for negative space than to create this mani. I used KBShimmer “Eclipse” to draw “branches” across my bare nails. I then used Mischo Beauty “Diana” and OPI “Sorry I’m Fizzy Today” to create little bouquets of flowers spanning across them. Lastly I used KBShimmer “Eclipse” again to create the black french tip.

Cate Blanchett’s entire look was one I just LOVED on Sunday. It was so simple and yet made a huge impact. She also looked really comfortable… like, the dress looked like it was probably pretty cozy to wear. Haha! For this look I used “KBShimmer “Eclipse” as the base with Deborah Lippmann Flat Top on top to mattify it. I then created dots using Zoya “Rocky”, China Glaze “At Vase Value”, OPI “Suzi Says Feng Shui” and Sally Hansen “Ivory Skull” at the base of my nail. Easy peasy, lemon squeezy!

Behati Prinsloo is a supermodel so naturally, she looked the part on the red carpet. I had a little chuckle at her necklace though because it looks like those chunky ball bead necklaces that were popular in the mid 00’s. Does anyone remember these or was it just me? Fashion inspired by Wilma Flintstone. LOL! I had them in about 30 colors and wore them with everything! I found them hiding in my closet a few years ago and finally decided it was time to say goodbye so please don’t tell me they are coming back in style now that I’ve given them to Goodwill! Haha!

Back on track here… her dress was STUH-HUN-NING so it was time to get my nail art on! I frankened a sheer black polish mixing together a bit of Essie “Licorice” and a clear polish in a spare nail polish bottle. I then dabbed on bits of Candy Lacquer “Rubies & Hearts”, intentionally leaving out the hearts and larger glitters. Then while that was still wet I blotted on random dots of Mischo Beauty “Diana” for some depth and more coverage and this is what came from it. I kinda like how it turned out!

Naomi Watts. Oh Naomi Watts. Her fashion choice for the Academy Awards had be swooning. I don’t think many people could pull of the Armani Privé gown she wore but she looked amazing! I tried to recreate her gown on my nails but it didn’t turn out quite as well as I had hoped but hey, you can’t win them all! I used OPI “Unfrost My Heart” with Deborah Lippmann Flat Top on top to make it matte. I used a gray acrylic paint to draw out the horizontal and vertical lines in a brick-laying fashion. I then used KBShimmer “Eclipse” to draw small uneven lines along the vertical stripes and to create teeny little dots along the horizontal ones.

There were so many other gorgeous looks on the red carpet last night! Some of my favorites were:

Who was your favorite? Elie Saab’s creations are amazing so basically anyone who wore an Elie Saab gown gets my vote. :)

  • Deborah - Love Varnish

Ha, I was actually telling my boyfriend about these posts, saying I was hoping you’d cover the Oscar’s. These all look so pretty! Cate’s look might be my favorite nailwise - Behati Prinsloo has the prettiest dress. And yes, those necklaces.. what did we do to ourselves?!

  • Very Emily

I wasn’t blown away by Cate Blanchett ‘s look but your nail art to match is super gorgeous! I watched the show like I do every year but it didn’ t blow me away like last year’s did with Ellen!

  • Mina

Gah! You make it difficult to choose just one - I gotta go with CAte Blanchett’s and Behati Prinsloo’s recreations as favourites, though.
ps. I had the same thought you had when I saw Behati’s necklace hahaha :)

  • Nail Polish Pursuit

Hi Valesha! You nailed all of these!!! WOW! My fave is Cate Blanchett’s recreation. So simple and so cute. JLo gets my vote for best dressed. Poor girl almost fell in that huge dress, but it was so pretty :)

  • Cat

Also, thank you Valesha for adding in those links to the fashions. I went to the site and noticed as I was clicking through that all the men were wearing extremely slim-cut tuxes. Don’t get me wrong — they looked great in them — but those Hollywood people as a whole look undernourished to me and when they wear something cut so tightly, they look as though they’ve just emerged from the hospital after a long illness. Yikes! Especially Tim McGraw!

  • Cat

Valesha, you know we LOVE these kinds of posts from you! Your interpretations of the gowns are spot-on, too. Does anyone else ever look at the stars’ manicures and think, “Meh! Boring!” Not that nails and dress should be matchy-matchy, but it would be nice to see something other than nude, black, or bare nails.

  • Suzanne K.

I love the one you did for Cate Blanchett. It’s so funny that you mentioned you almost did Jamie Chung’s dress as a mani because that was the first thing I thought when I saw that dress!

  • Sara

I’m always impressed by how well you capture these dress designs, you’re so talented! I really love your design mimicking Behati’s dress, the sheer base and red glitter combo is perfect!

  • Vic

Lorelei’s dress is amazing but you’re right, I’m not sure it’s an Oscars dress either.
